Meet the Owners

Welcome to Playin’ Hooky, our home away from home! We are Todd and Molly Wilkes, and we live full-time in Decatur, Georgia (just eight miles outside of Atlanta). We are a family of four. We have two children, a daughter and a son, as well as three furry children – 2 German Shorthair Pointers and one Miniature Dachshund. Our children love to visit our vacation get away and bring their friends! When we are not fishing or relaxing in Steinhatchee we are working in Atlanta, where we own a Residential Renovation Company. How did we end up with a house here? In 2014 we took a family vacation to Steinhatchee and have been coming every scallop season since then! We were attracted to the small, old town feel of this community and the friendly people that live here. In 2018 we purchased Playin’ Hooky and started renovating it so that we could share it with our friends and family. The more time we spend here the more we love it! There is so much to do but if you just want to relax it is the perfect place to do that as well. We are so excited for you to spend time at our home away from home! We hope you enjoy your time here as much as we do. - Todd and Molly Wilkes

  • Fantastic property!

This was a great house, with a well appointed kitchen. It had plenty of room for our group of 4 adults and 2 kids. It was very cozy and functional and the private dock made it even better. We look forward to future stays at Playin' Hooky.

Steinhatchee has always been an angler's paradise. The pristine shoreline and shallow grass flats provide habitat for an abundance of salt water fish. In the summer season, you can try your hand at some of the finest scalloping in the world. Whether you've come to give fly fishing a try, ease downstream in a canoe or kayak, or capture the glorious scenery that abounds on a ride on the Steinhatchee River, it's yours for the taking.

Steinhatchee is a small town in Florida’s Big Bend Region. It is often referred to as “the best kept secret in Florida”. It is home to the best scalloping in Florida. Scalloping in Steinhatchee is a fantastic way for you and your family to spend your summer vacation. Once you reach your scalloping destination, let the fun begin! The most common technique for scalloping is diving down and grabbing the scallops from the bottom of the seagrass beds, or along the seagrass beds where the sand/mud meets the edge of the grasses. Keep your collected scallops in a mesh bag rather than in a pocket or in your swimsuit, to avoid being pinched. Enjoying the entire process of this activity is what it is all about! Refer to this website for all the rules and regulations regarding Scalloping

Fishing in Steinhatchee is the perfect way to experience this charming, small town. There are many ways to fish in Steinhatchee, depending on what method you prefer. You can charter a private fishing boat, rent a party boat, you can try kayak fishing if you are a little more adventurous, or you can fish off the shore. In Steinhatchee, there are many piers, jetties, and docks. One of the reasons why Florida’s Gulf Coast is such a popular fishing attraction is that there is action 365 days a year. Offshore and nearshore fish can be seasonal, but inshore species are always available. However, the growth and number of fish can change during and out of their season. It is important to be informed about the bag and size limits regarding your catch. And of course, be sure to abide by the law. You will need a license for any type of fishing.
